What is drug testing?

Drug testing in the employment context involves screening candidates or employees for the use of illicit drugs (and sometimes misuse of prescription medications) to ensure a drug-free workplace. ScoutLogic offers a comprehensive range of drug testing options, including pre-employment drug tests, random drug testing programs for existing employees, post-accident testing, and DOT-compliant drug tests for roles regulated by the Department of Transportation. Our services use certified labs and Medical Review Officers (MROs) to verify results.

Why it matters

Drug testing matters because it can protect your employees and customers. It’s an investment in safety and quality that can pay off in numerous ways.

Promote workplace safety. Employees under the influence of drugs can pose serious safety risks, especially in industries like manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, or construction. Conducting drug testing demonstrates that your company takes the safety of their employees and communities seriously.

Increase productivity and reduce absenteeism. Substance abuse among employees can lead to frequent absenteeism, tardiness, decreased productivity, and increased turnover. Drug testing (especially pre-employment) can help you decide if this is the right role for the individual.

Lower healthcare and insurance costs. Employees engaging in substance misuse can drive up healthcare costs due to more frequent illnesses or injuries. They can also raise your workers’ compensation premiums because substance-related accidents on the job are common. A proactive drug testing policy can help mitigate these costs over time.

Comply with laws and contracts. Certain industries and jurisdictions have laws or contracts that require drug and alcohol testing. Additionally, some states have regulations regarding unemployment or workers' compensation that favor companies that drug test. By implementing drug testing, you ensure you’re meeting these legal and regulatory obligations.

Encourage a healthier workforce. Having a clear no-drugs stance and backing it up with testing fosters a culture of health and responsibility. It can even encourage employees who are struggling with substance issues to seek help, knowing that it’s not acceptable at work. Overall, drug testing conveys the message that you value your employees’ well-being and the quality of your services.

How ScoutLogic does it differently

ScoutLogic offers a modern approach to employment drug testing that sets us apart.

Extensive clinic network & convenience. We provide access to the broadest clinic network for drug testing, meaning that regardless of where your candidate or employee is located, we can likely find a nearby collection site. Importantly, we offer self-scheduling for candidates, allowing them to get tested without the need for back-and-forth communication. ScoutLogic even provides e-registration (electronic drug test orders), so candidates often don’t need a paper form – they can just show up with an ePassport at the clinic, which reduces friction and speeds up the hiring process.

Faster turnaround & proactive follow-up. We know that drug testing can sometimes be a slow step in the onboarding process, so we've taken measures to expedite it. ScoutLogic proactively follows up with candidates to inform and remind them of the clinic appointment. We also leverage quick result technologies when available. Additionally, all lab results undergo a Medical Review Officer (MRO) verification process at no extra cost. The MRO process is efficient – negative results are released quickly, and if something is positive, the MRO contacts the donor to check for any prescription explanations.

DOT and compliance expertise. We provide DOT-compliant drug tests and assist you in navigating the required procedures. We can also integrate with the FMCSA Clearinghouse requirements for CDL drivers. Moreover, we stay current on state laws regarding drug testing and align processes with applicable laws.

Integrated health screening solutions. Often, drug testing is one part of a broader pre-employment screening process that may also include physicals or other health assessments. ScoutLogic can bundle these through our occupational health services. Our system keeps everything organized, and results are delivered in one consolidated report.

Candidate experience focus. Taking a drug test can be a new or anxious experience for candidates. We aim to make it as smooth and respectful as possible. Our communications to the candidate are clear, friendly, and provide all the necessary instructions. And because we allow them to schedule at a convenient location and time, we remove a lot of stress. If they have questions or need to reschedule, our Scouts are there to help. Furthermore, by handling follow-ups (like reminding someone to get tested) on your behalf, we take the burden off your recruiters.
